ARTESIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS COMMENDS

EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS AS NEW RESEARCH

REFRAMES NEW MEXICO’S LITERACY NARRATIVE

Artesia Public Schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 23, 2026

Artesia, NM— Artesia School District (APS) is proud to recognize the outstanding work of our

educators and students following the release of a new statewide literacy analysis commissioned by

the New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders (NMCEL). The study, conducted by Evress

Analytics, confirms what Artesia educators see every day in classrooms - New Mexico students are

learning, growing, and meeting high expectations.

The NMCEL white paper explains that New Mexico’s lower reported proficiency rates reflect the

rigor of our literacy standards—not a lack of student progress. When student reading performance

is measured using Lexile growth over time, students across the state, including those in Artesia

Public Schools, demonstrate growth that meets or exceeds national norms.

“As educators, we’ve always known the potential and ability of our students”, said Superintendent

Darian Jaramillo. “It’s energizing to see data that reflects the strong work happening in our

classrooms and the dedication of New Mexico educators statewide. I am incredibly proud of our

students and staff!”

Artesia Public Schools is honored to be part of this statewide community of districts contributing

data and instructional leadership to this effort. The findings reinforce the importance of focusing on

student growth, quality instruction, and long-term progress rather than relying solely on single year proficiency labels.

Most importantly, this moment belongs to students and educators. Despite challenges, they

continue to show resilience, commitment, and academic growth. This report affirms the progress

being made and the impact of their daily work.

Artesia Public School applauds the New Mexico Coalition of Educational Leaders for advancing a

more accurate, data-informed conversation about literacy in our state. APS remains committed to

supporting high-quality instruction, celebrating student growth, and partnering with educators

statewide to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed
